I figured out my problem..

Tue Nov 20, 2007, 5:52 PM
So here's what I need help with and it's a doozy.

OK, so..: I have ideas for a story. I have a plot arc, I have a few ideas for scenes in between and a general direction.. I have NO clue how to connect the dots. How do I approach this? What's the best way to actually pull that off?

  • Mood: Defeated
  • Listening to: Les Misérables - Original London Cast
  • Reading: En Komikers Uppväxt
  • Watching: Beauty and the Beast
  • Eating: Sprödkex
  • Drinking: Coke

That's a good question. If anyone clues you in, could you pass the word?

I have this problem on a regular basis - particularly with long stories. So... The answer I came up with is fairly straight-forward:

Write what you have. Start from the beginning if you have one, stop when you get to the finish of that section, and then start on the next. At SOME point during the writing stage, you will find the connections and fit them together.

IF NOT (and this happened to me on my Anubis novel, which is why it took ELEVEN YEARS to finish and was stomped into the ground by a professional novel called "American Gods" - so much for my 'original idea', eh?), do this:

Look at the storyline from the VILLAIN's perspective. Why is s/he doing what s/he is doing? What got them started on that path? What are they looking for out of it all?

I tend to start with a character and then write events as that character sees them - not so good at presenting the villain's side, so to fix that (and to break that massive writer's block on how to finish that novel), I looked at the other side of the equation. Sometimes, that's enough to push you forward.

As always, I hope this helps. ^_^

Hejsan! Thanks, dude.

I'm going to respond more in a more.. uh, lengthy fashion later, but what if I don't actually have a straight up antagonist? My protagonist IS my antagonist... Because he's questionably sane.

Ooh... THAT adds an unexpected twist...

I would write out a few scenes that you have planned and then once they are done, think on how they are connected. If the story is written by the individual, perhaps some background on how he got that way, or if not, perhaps starting off with a completely different approach - say, a doctor's report on his sanity just to give the reader an idea that all is not right with this guy...

Just an idea. ^_^

You seem to do OK with it. I think it's easier when you write more sort of linear/D&D style plots. Though, I do miss your cutaways to the goblins.

Without blowing the whole plot, this is a guy who wakes up one day in hell. Like, really. Hell.

So he goes through some permutations of how to deal with it and finally decides that he should save (see: kill) as many innocents as possible (explained in the story) and then off himself to try to start the cycle over (i.e., be born again). So basically, it's a crime story through the eyes of a criminal. It's quite dark. In fact, Josh (*Forsaken2544) asked me how it felt to be writing the manual for the criminally insane.

I don't think it's quite THAT bad. But I'm not sure who to define as the 'antagonist,' you know?

I might be throwing a piece in with the goblins soon. (Likely after the first fight scene with the heroes.) I might even flesh Kirus out a bit. (I want that fight to be epic...at least as far as an early-story confrontation goes)

So uh, is this "I don't want to help you"?

Is this really such an incredibly disturbing plotline? I mean, it's just horror?? I like to write OTHER things, too!
